Yemisi Ogunleye, a German short-putter, won a gold medal at the recently concluded Olympics in France. Yemisi’s win marked Germany’s first gold medal at the Olympics since 1996. After her win, she broke out in a worship song in her presser.

Gold Medalist Breaks Into Worship Song After Olympic Win

Yemisi Ogunleye is a German short-putter who was born to a Nigerian father. She won a Gold medal at the Olympics on August 9, 2024, after her final throw of 20 meters. During her press conference interview after her win, she praised Jesus and put Him at the center. Prior to February 2024, she hadn’t won a national, European, or World Championship medal.

She said, “Some time ago, I was just praying and asking God what He wants to do with the Olympic Games. And He was like, ‘We are going to get gold.’”

She then added, “I did not have faith at that moment. But He kept on telling me. It sounds literally crazy, but I have seen it in front of my eyes, and I really started to have faith and the confidence that it is possible.”

A journalist asked whether Ogunleye sings in the choir, and she answered in the affirmative. She was then asked what song was going through her mind as she threw.

She said, “After falling, I went back to my seat and sang I Almost Let Go. It goes like this” She then sang part of the song for about one minute with a melodious voice.

I’m here today because God kept me. I’m alive today because of His grace. Oh, He kept me, His mercies kept me. So I wouldn’t let go.”

Yemisi Ogunleye has been open about her faith in the past. She shares how her faith has helped her through challenges like a serious knee injury. Again, shortly after a big win, she put Jesus at the center.

The song, ‘I Almost Let Go’ by Kurt Carr, was recorded in 2004. Carr shared a clip of Ogunleye’s video on social media following the event, saying: “You better tell the world Yemisi Ogunleye.”

Carr continued by quoting part of the song,

He kept me, so I wouldn’t let go. Thank you for letting your light shine and showing the world your love of God. Congrats on winning a gold medal for Germany in shot put.”

Many people have commended Ogunleye, commenting on how she has encouraged them in their own faith journey.
